Despite being set during the waning days of British colonialism, the bullish nature of the exclusive and fiercely racist â€Å"Kipling-haunted little Clubs† [69] ensure that any form of politic al dissent is crushed, leaving the protagonist, John Flory, isolated in his comprehension of the ways in which Empire degrades the natives whom it self-importantly claims to uplift. Similarly to Forster’s narrative, Orwell expresses a firm belief that no member of a subjugated race can develop a true friendship with a member of the dominant race, as the oppressive political structures at work in Burma ensure that such a friendship will end in betrayal and resentment. As Flory reflects following a heated political exchange in the European Club, â€Å"With Indians there must be no loyalty, no real friendship.† [80], a notion which augments the socially-constructed and seemingly impenetrable barrier to positive relationships between Englishmen and their colonial subjects. Paradoxically, however, both novels feature an unlikely alliance between a Western male and an educated native, in both cases a doctor. Indeed, Orwell uses the bond between Flory and Dr. Veriswami to h umorously employ the diagnostic language adopted by many politically engaged writers during the interwar period, derisively likening the British Empire to an elderly patient: â€Å"Aha, Mr Flory, she iss very low, very low! Grave complications setting in. Septicaemia, peritonitis and paralysis of the ganglia.† [35]. By adopting the language of diagnosis and cure as a metaphor for the dying British Empire, Orwell evokes a disturbing sense of cultural sickness and contagion, which, in turn, warns of the corruptive nature of the Anglo-Indians’ crudely mercenary approach to society. Instead of bringing peace and justice to the native people of the East, Orwell suggests that the function of the British simply amounts to â€Å"rubbing our dirt onto them† [40], with Englishmen and Burmans alike committing abhorrent deeds for the sake of social mobility and prestige. Forster’s novel addresses a similar process of moral debasement at work amongst British expatriat es in India: â€Å"They all become exactly the same, not worse, not better. I give any Englishman two years† [9]. Even the Indian Dr. Aziz – an affectionate and youthful presence for much of the novel becomes consumed by a â€Å"genuine hatred of the English†, eventually isolating himself from Flory as a result of his humiliation at the hands of the British law: â€Å"I am an Indian at last, he thought, standing motionless in the rain† [278-9]. It is therefore clear that, rather than bringing a beacon of hope and prosperity to the East, as literary antecedents such as Rudyard Kipling had implied, the narratives of Forster and Orwell depict the presence of Anglo-Indians as a deeply destructive force in the East, circulating petty resentments and deep-seated prejudices which eventually tear apart positive human relationships. In this way, the highly anglicised colonial setting evoked by Forster and Orwell is arguably a microcosm of British society, with its myopic â€Å"country club† mentality acting as a poor recreation of suburban England. Indeed, the political somnolence of Middle England is a recurring theme in Orwell’s writing; his personal account of the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia (1938), expresses his dismay at returning from Spain to a complacent, distinctly â€Å"English† society, with seemingly no connection to foreign affairs (â€Å"Earthquakes in Japan, famine in China, revolutions in Mexico? Don’t worry, the milk will be on the doorstep tomorrow morning†). Interestingly, however, both Orwell and Forster’s biting satire is most ruthlessly exercised towards Anglo-Indian women, whom they frequently depict as chief collaborators in the colonial system of oppression and subjugation. For example, the haughty, colonial wife in A Passage to India, Mrs Turton, most effectively encapsulates the Englishwoman’s scornful and highly gendered intolerance of Indian native s through her series of increasingly absurd outbursts: â€Å"Why, they ought to crawl from here to the caves on their hands and knees whenever and Englishwoman’s in sight, they oughtn’t be spoken to, they ought to be spat at† [204]. However, it is important to recognise the differing ways in which Orwell and Forster approach their critique of English colonialism. Unlike Forster in A Passage to India, Orwell actually addresses the underlying economic reasons for the British presence in the East: â€Å"how can you make out that we are in this country for any purpose except to steal? It’s so simple. The official holds the Burman down while the businessman goes through his pockets† [38]. Through Flory’s withering account of colonial ambitions in Burma, the reader gains an insight into Orwell’s growing political radicalism, with critics agreeing that his experience in the country doubtlessly accentuated his sensitivity to the unjust caste system at home in Britain. Forster, on the other hand, avoids making these sweeping structural condemnations, instead placing emphasis on the personal rather than directly addressing the social and political implications of British colonialism. This humanist tendency is apparent through his repeated speculation over whether an Englishman and Indian can ever be friends under colonialism, a preoccupation that runs throughout the text. It is important to remember that Forster is not advocating an end to British imperialism – instead he favours a more conciliatory and tolerant form of British rule in India thus his text lacks the radica l undertones of Orwell’s Burmese Days. Moreover, Forster does not share the overly bleak outlook held by Orwell, as memorably demonstrated in the final horseback-riding scene, where Fielding and Aziz attempt at reconciliation:But the horses didn’t want it – they swerved apart; the earth didn’t want itthe birds, the carrion, the Guest House, that came into view as they issued from the gap and saw Mau beneath: they didn’t want it, they said in their hundred voices, â€Å"No, not yet,† and the sky said, â€Å"No, not there.† [306]The literary theorist Edward Said believes this conclusion to be â€Å"disappointing†, serving as a gloomy mark of the East’s permanent estrangement from the West. However, he arguably fails to acknowledge the resonant sense of hope embedded in these lines (â€Å"not yet not there†), and the gentle poignancy of the two friends’ final outing. Through its depiction of the complexities and development of Fielding and Aziz’s relationship, the novel subtly implies that cross-cultural friendship, though frustratingly elusive in colonial times, may be achieved in the future. As such, Forster could be said to share the â€Å"evolutionary meliorism† of writers such as Thomas Hardy, who favoured a reasoned and rational approach to social issues. While Mrs Moore and Adela ultimately fail in their â€Å"quest† for true communion with India, the reader is awakened to the possibility of a new age of tolerance and understanding, therefore raising hopes for the liberalisation of Anglo-Indian rule and improved relations between East and West. In conclusion, both Forster and Orwell present a penetrating and socially conscious depiction of Britain’s weakening control over the East, exhibiting varying degrees of pessimism with regard to the future of relations between Englishmen and natives. Prerogative Powers or Prerogative Powers in the UK Free Sample

Question: Discuss the Origins of Prerogative Powers, the Role of the Courts and Parliament in Reconciling the Differences and the Developments Surrounding National Security. Prerogative Powers History The origins of the prerogative powers or prerogative powers in the UK can be traced from an era when the underlying monarch tended to act in a dual capacity of head of state and feudal lord. Prerogative Powers Parliamentary Scrutiny With regards to the usage of prerogative powers, parliamentary scrutiny does exist but at the moment it is weak which has been outlined through the relevant discussion of the applicable mechanisms. One of the most significant prerogative powers is the authority to go to war which remains almost exclusively with the Prime Minister and exercised along with cabinet level consultations as the Monarch is the supreme commander for the armed forces. This is despite the fact that the a parliamentary consent is required to maintain the armed forces at peace time in accordance with the Bill of Rights 1689[7]. Thus, theoretically, the power of the executive to manoeuvre the armed forces essentially remains unfettered. Another critical prerogative power available with the ministers is the management of civil services which allows them the control over primary legislation enacted under an Order-in-Council. To put these statutes into practice, the nod of the legislature is not required even though later a parliamentary act could potentially override the same as has been highlighted in the Council of Civil Service Unions v. Minister for the Civil Service case[10]. Thus, any legislation enacted by the executive in this manner provides effective power to bypass the legislature and effectively makes them superior to the legislature. To declare the British territorial limits along with ceding any territory is also a prerogative power that the executive can exercise without parliamentary scrutiny. It is highly unlikely that ever since the passing of the Island of Rockall Act 1972, that there would be any giving away of British territory without taking Parliamentary approval but the option in this regard still remains if only on paper. In relation to the immigration related prerogative powers, they have been severely curtailed ever since the enactment of Immigration Act 1971, however passport issuance and revocation still falls under prerogative power available with the executive. As a result, Parliament has no role in restraining any individual who might be forced to leave the UK and anyone who may be recalled back to the UK at a later time[11]. it is evident that such actions amount to interference with the autonomy with the individual but no justifications may be required in these cases. Considering the role of the immigrant community in various crimes, this power could also have significant implications for the national security particularly in an era or terrorism. Besides, the Monarch has continued to retain the prerogative powers related to appointments which allows for making critical appointments which is not only limited to ministers but also includes other vital members such as civil servants, judges and certain other appointments to public offices. Additionally, the power to grant various honours including political honours still is essentially the Monarchs power[12]. However, as highlighted previously the Monarch has to act in these areas as per the Prime Ministers advice and thus exercise of these powers remains outside the ambit of parliamentary scrutiny. As a result, the PM has a freehand in making these crucial appointments which have tremendous implications for the security and functioning of the nation. Clearly, with such unfettering power in appointment of these high officials, there is immense scope for abuse of power as has been highlighted in the cash for honours scandal that came to light in 2006-2007. In the existence of ade quate parliamentary scrutiny, it is plausible that such situation would not arise and the appointments may be made after greater deliberations and sound reasoning. Based on the above instances, it seems evident that the with the wide prerogative powers, still existing which tend to supersede the parliamentary procedures established, it may be fair to assume that there is a weakening of democracy and also associated institutions. It may be unwise to provide such wide sweeping power with immense stakes for national security solely at the discretion of select individuals which ruling out a majority of elected representatives who do not merit a say in critical issues affecting the future of the people. Prerogative Powers Judicial Scrutiny The judicial scrutiny of the prerogative powers usage seems to be more frequency in comparison with the parliamentary scrutiny. The weak role played by the judiciary in this regard can be highlighted through the following discussion. A leading case worth mentioning is the R v. Secretary of State for Home Affairs, ex p Northumbria Police Authority[13] in which it the Court of Appeal ruled that the ancient prerogative of maintaining peace when the state is not in any emergency. The judicial scrutiny in the above case remained weak as the court might be reluctant in involving itself in police powers due to the controversial nature of the subject. Further, referring to the AG v. De Keyser's Royal Hotel[14] case which took place in the early part of the 20th century, the honourable judge Lord Dunedin opined that the ground of action on which the prerogative powers are applied is essentially provided by the statute and thus it tends to rule over the prerogative powers. It can be affirmed from the above argument made in the case above that increasing scrutiny with statute or judicial activism could potentially restrain the government powers and bring the various arms of the government in a more balanced position[15]. There has been reluctance on the part of the judiciary in the recent times with regards to carrying out a detailed scrutiny in the Crowns prerogative powers and also the House of Lords has been exceptionally favourable to the government of the day. A controversial case in this regard was the R (Bancoult) v. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs[16] case. This case involved the issuance of a Orders-in-Council in 2004 which was deployed in order to overturn the decision of regarding indigenous people exile as unlawful. However, this was subsequently found unlawful by both the High Court and also the Court of Appeal. However, subsequently, an appeal was made to the House of Lords and the verdict was in favour of the government as the Lords endorsed the action taken by the Minister which formed the available prerogative powers. Thus, this allows for fair use of prerogative powers by the executive. The decision taken in this particular case affirms the views expressed by Lord Denning in the Laker Airways Ltd v. Department of Trade[19] case. He had advocated that if the usage of prerogative power has been carried out in an improper manner resulting in impinging of the legitimate individual or sectional rights, then the courts need to intervene in such cases[20]. From the above instances, it is apparent that the judicial scrutiny tends to be stronger than the parliamentary scrutiny but still there is a strong case of making it more stringent and prevalent. There is a conservative bias on the part of higher courts that are not keen to challenge the orthodox views and conventions even the times have changed and nature of threats have become different. As a result, there is high concentration of power amongst the executive without adequate consultations and deliberations. The passage of Human Rights Act 1998 has made some headways with enhancing the judicial scrutiny and invalidating those orders-in-council that are discriminatory in nature or interfere with individual rights. However, for the prerogative powers which do not fall within the ambit of human rights are still experiencing limited scrutiny and thus could continue to enjoy unchecked powers with serious implications for the national security. Need for Reforms Based on the above analysis, the worrisome observation of limited scrutiny over prerogative powers of the executive is apparent. As a result, there is an urgent need of reforms aimed at strengthen the scrutiny offered by both parliament as well as judiciary. An optimum solution is to scrap all the prerogative powers and instead enact respective statutes to deal with these subjects. But it seems that this is not going to happen anytime soon. Thus, alternative pragmatic suggestions are being offered for consideration[21]. The first measure to be taken is to ensure that the actions taken by the PM and other ministers while acting on their prerogative powers must be subject to parliamentary oversight through the mechanism of dedicated committees. In case of any discrepancy, the issue may be raised in the parliament with the committee report being tabled. Also, it is essential to increase the scrutiny power of the judiciary by ensuring that the judges display more judicial activism and are driven by public interest rather than conventions and orthodox practices. The judges need to take bold decisions which are meant to take the nation forward and also address various issues jeopardising national security[22]. This is critical as parliamentary oversight is expected to remain weak even in the future as the government of the day tends to enjoy a majority in the lower house and thus it is unlikely that the MPs would challenge the party leadership. Conclusion I have come to the conclusion that prerogative powers do remain an important part of the United Kingdom's constitution due to their continued use, and because of the amount of power which can be exerted by exercising prerogative powers. Parliamentary and judicial scrutiny of prerogative powers is weak, but in a modern democracy prerogative powers should be subject to greater Parliamentary scrutiny so that the will of the people can be followed in their exercise; and they should be subject to greater judicial scrutiny by a neutral and impartial judiciary who can make sure they are being exercised fairly Reference Andrew, S. and S. My first acting job was in a play directed by Brocka called Mga Ama, Mga Anak. I was one of the two men who destroyed the big table at the end of the play,† he said in between sips of coffee. â€Å"In today’s crop of seasoned performers, Robert Arevalo and Spanky Manikan are the closest talents a director can tap to play the role of Zacarias, which demands a big stage presence,† Lamangan said of Arevalo and Manikan, who alternates in essaying the lead role. â€Å"I did not make a mistake in choosing them as lead actors,† he added. As a young kid, I’ve watched them in my Lola’s Aawitan Kita and her other productions, also in the television shows of my mother. Now I get to share a stage with them. I get to act with them. It is an interesting mix of talents in one show. However, not long after, Henry makes use of his ability to travel in time and wins a lottery. This event essentially changes the quality of life of the both. They buy a large house with a separate place for Clare to work on art. So, we can state, that these two people have managed to overcome the hard times of power-struggle stage. Summing up the behavior of the protagoni sts during this period, we can say, that Henry wanted to deal with the conflict in a non-destructive manner, while Clare was at first not keen on preserving the relationship. They build up healthy relationships on the basis of mutual understanding and cooperation. This stage is determined by affection and care for each other, both talking about the both partners and about the relationships with children. To follow the plot of the film, a viewer observes further events development from the prism of fatality. Naturally, the film could hardly be called a drama and, therefore, win a ttention, without some â€Å"break†, tragic climax of love relationships. Here, in ‘Time Traveler’s Wife’ the observer can analyze the situation of Henry’s own death perception. Inability to change inevitable events at first causes mere disillusion inside of the protagonists, who are supposed to wait for the fate’s will. Structural and Developmental Assessment of the G Family Essay Caring for the family from a holistic point of view is at the very heart of nursing. The family unit is one of the most important foundational institutions in society. While it may seem inconsequential to some, the family unit provides identity, stability, and support. Family dynamics and crises can affect an individual greatly, both physically and emotionally. Thus, it is important for nurses to always include the family when assessing the individual patient. The Calgary Model provides a framework to accurately and comprehensively assess a family. It comprises of three main categories: structural, developmental, and functional. Using the Calgary Model, I plan to analyze the G family from the structural and developmental point of view. Internal Structure A family is composed of â€Å"two or more persons who are linked together by intimate association, resources, and values† (Bomar, 2004). It is whomever the individual decides provides for their physical and emotional needs and considers to be in their family. As for the G family, they would be considered a nuclear family. Mr. and Mrs. G are a married couple with four young children, E, age ten, J, age eight, B, age six, and A, age four. They live in the suburbs of Charlotte, N.C., describe their economic standing as upper middle class, and consider their race and ethnicity as Indian (Asian). When I posed the question to Mr. and Mrs. G of whom do you consider as your family, they both replied each other and their children. Each individual child also replied that their parents and siblings are considered their family. An assessment of gender roles helps the nurse to see how each individual perceives their role within the family (Wright Leahy, 2009). For the G family, gender roles are primarily determined based on culture. In the Indian culture, the husband is considered the head of the family and assumes the role of the primary monetary provider while the wife assumes care of the children and the household. In the G family, Mr. G is the primary provider for the family. He is the Chief Financial Consultant at a Fortune 500 company. Even though Mrs. G has a master’s degree in engineering, Mr. G. feels that a mother’s place is with the children and her role should to be rear them. While Mrs. G admits that she enjoys being a stay-at-home mom, she feels that all the energy and effort spent at getting a master’s degree was for nothing. Many times she feels that since she is able to work, she should work, but she respects her husband decision. This is where culture plays a major rol e, because in the Indian culture, the wife generally has to respect the husband’s wishes. While discussing gender roles, I also questioned them about their sexual orientation. Mr. and Mrs. G both say they are heterosexual and have always been heterosexual. They both admit to never being sexually active prior to getting married when they were both 23 years old. Mr. G says that the reason he waited till marriage to have sex was primarily due to religious convictions. Mrs. G also admits to being religiously convicted to wait till marriage to have sex, but also admits it was also out of fear of what her parents might do if she ever became pregnant before marriage. She went on to describe how in the Indian culture, having a child out of wedlock has grave repercussions for both the person involved and the family. It would cause the involved person to be cast out of the family, and place a bad stigma on the rest of the family members. Rank order is used to identify the positions of each child within the family in terms of age and gender (Wright Leahy, 2009). The children of the G family include the two older boys: E, age ten and J, age eight, and also the two younger girls, B, age six and A, age four. Mrs. G is the middle child, with an older brother and a younger sister, and Mr. G is the oldest of three children, with a younger brother and sister. At the present moment they are unsure if they would like to have more children. A subsystem is a group of members comprised of individuals linked together through a common association, such as gender, interest, or function (Wright Leahy, 2009). Mrs. G’s subsystem includes mother, wife, daughter, and sister. Mr. G’s subsystem includes father, husband, son, and brother. For the two boys, E and J, their subsystems include son, brother, and grandson. For the two girls, B and A, their subsystems include daughter, sister, and granddaughter. Mr. G admits that due to his work he has trouble balancing his many subsystems. His work requires him to travel across the country almost every week; thus, he does not have adequate time to spend being both a father and a husband. He feels as though he is always compromising time with someone, and he regrets this greatly because he is missing important milestones with his children and not spending enough time with his wife; however, because he is the sole provider he has to make this sacrifice in order to provide for his family. Boundaries serve to define and protect the family structure and system (Wright Leahy, 2009). From the information I gathered from the G family, I would describe their family boundaries as clear and permeable. Between husband and wife they mutually agree that they are not to have relationships with anybody else, and that conflicts must first try to be resolved by themselves. If conflicts arise among the children, the parents have the final say. The G family is Christian, and are careful of whom they allow into their family circle, making sure that they have the same Christian values. This is not to say that they isolate themselves from anyone who is of a different religious background; on the contrary, they say that they befriend all who they meet to try to bring them to know God. External Structure Extended family is very important to the G family. For Mrs. G, she is very open with her mother, and describes her as her best friend. Even though her mother is in India, they talk to each other on the phone every day. On the other hand, Mrs. G is not particularly close to her father. Although she loves her father deeply, she describes him as being overly religious. She says that it is very difficult to talk to him because he looks at everything through the prism of religion and will often condemn her, even if she is just asking for a piece of advice. Mr. G’s family is much more laid back. He has an open relationship with both his parents and siblings, and is able to talk to them freely. Mr. G’s extended family of his parents and brother are going to be playing a more important role in their lives because the G family is planning to move to Houston, Texas in relation to Mr. G’s job, and both his parents and his brother already live there. While Mrs. G is happy that they are going to have close family nearby, she does not want to live too close to her in-laws because she says that they will tell her how to raise her children and she does not like that. Larger systems refer to social agencies within the community that the family is in frequent contact with (Wright Leahy, 2009). Mr. and Mrs. G say that the biggest and most important system in their family is their church. They are very active in the church by always planning and organizing activities. Furthermore, people in the church really look up to them as being a great example of a loving family. For the children, school is important and they are part of many extracurricular activities, such as piano lessons, swimming, and basketball. Furthermore, Mrs. G attends a Zumba class everyday with some of her friends from the church. The next category in the Calgary Model is the developmental assessment. The G family is considered to be in stage three of the family life cycle, â€Å"Families with young children†. In this stage, some changes that are required for the family to proceed developmentally include: adjusting the marital system to make space for the children, joining in childrearing, financial, and household tasks, and realignment of relationships to include parenting and grandparenting roles (Wright Leahy, 2009). The G family admits that they still struggle at times to meet each other’s personal and emotional needs because the needs of the children are now their main priority. However, since the children are now getting older and are at an age where they are able to keep themselves preoccupied, Mr. and Mrs. G feel that they are able to spend more quality time with each other. According to the Framework of Systemic Organization by Marie-Louise Friedmann the family is social system with the purpose of relating culture to its members (Bomar, 2009). Its elements include family stability, growth, control, and spirituality (Bomar, 2009). The G family provides for each of these elements within their family by enabling opportunities to learn about societal norms and behaviors, interacting with community resources, setting boundaries, and encouraging the self growth of each member. After assessing the G family from a structural and developmental point of view, I can see that they are family that deeply care for and love each other unconditionally. They provide for each other’s physical and emotional needs, and make sacrifices when necessary for the betterment of the family. They acknowledge that they are not a perfect family and have many flaws, but they try to continuously learn from their experiences and seek ways to improve their family life.

Stephen Crane's The Open Boat Humanity often tends to see itself as being somehow important in the grand scheme of the Universe. We speak of 'fate' as if we were put here for some reason, or purpose. We have our religions, which often serve as an engine to drive our lives and as a means to give meaning to them. But why do we think of ourselves in such a superior fashion? Do we really matter at all? Would the Universe stop if we were suddenly taken away? In his short story, 'The Open Boat,' Stephen Crane shows us a Universe totally unconcerned with the affairs of humankind; it is an indifferent Universe in which Man has to struggle to survive. The characters in the story come face to face with this indifference and are nearly overcome by Nature's lack of concern. They survive only through persistence and cooperation. All we have, Crane asserts, in our constant struggle for survival, is 'stubborn pride--and each other.' The story opens with four men, known simply as the captain, the oiler, the correspondent, and the cook, stranded in the ocean in a small boat. Crane's descriptions in these opening scenes show right away the antagonism of the men and the sea and nature's lack of concern for their tragedy: 'The birds sat comfortably in groups, and they were envied by some in the dingey, for the wrath of the sea was no more to them than it was to a covey of prairie chickens a thousand miles inland.'(2) The men are in a desperate situation, but nature continues in its way...

Health Care Management Internship Experience Labovitz School of Business and Economics University of Minnesota Duluth Description of the Program The purpose of the internship program is to provide juniors and seniors with an opportunity to enhance and apply what they learn in their academic program while working in a health service organization. Students are pursuing a degree in business administration and are majoring in health care management.Those that enroll in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) Health Care Management Internship Program will need to accumulate a minimum of 200 hours of work experience over the course of an academic semester or during the summer. The intent of the program is to provide relevant organizational experience to students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to work before completing a degree. Employers are encouraged to participate in the cooperative education internship program.The basic requirements include a clear agreement regarding program requirements, the type of experience being provided, and a line of communication between the student’s mentor/supervisor and the faculty advisor. Internship Objectives The Health Care Management Internship Program enables students to gain added knowledge and skills through structured work experience. Opportunities are available to the student through an internship that cannot be achieved in the classroom. The primary goal of this endeavor is student learning.The specific objectives are to enable students to learn more about health care management; inform the health care community of student abilities and career preparation; give students the opportunity to develop a sense of responsibility for their continued learning by working independently and collaboratively within the parameters of an internship experience; familiarize students with the experiences related to the process of seeking employment; and strengthen ties between LSBE and the health care communi ty by seeking advice from health care leaders concerning curriculum planning, tudent recruitment, and graduate placement. The internship should be designed to provide the student a hands-on experience in a health service organization. It should provide a first hand look at day-to-day operations of a facility and provide the student an opportunity to observe and assist employees in various departments, if possible. It should provide the student an opportunity to observe and be actively involved in management activities using basic management skills of communication, problem solving, management of relationships, and analysis of information. Roles and Responsibilities of the PartiesEmployers of student interns are an integral part of the work experience program. It is important that employers understand that the internship is an educational program integrated with practical work experience. This requires the employer to give careful thought to the utilization of students who will be em ployed. During the internship the student is not a volunteer or an additional staff member but a trainee working to fulfill his/her learning needs in as active a manner as possible with the capability to make positive contributions to the achievement of organizational goals.The following items are basic responsibilities of the employer, mentor, faculty advisor, and student. Employer: 1. Interview students who apply for an internship with your organization to provide them with the added benefit of going through an interview and to help you decide which student best meets your employment needs. 2. Review and discuss student learning objectives during the interview or at the start of the internship, in order to identify means by which they will be accomplished during the employment period. 3.Plan work assignments progressively so that the student will advance from routine activities at the beginning of the internship to more job variety and complexity as needed knowledge and skills are gained. 4. Evaluate student work performance. As a role model and supervisor of students, employers are in a position to provide interns a thorough performance evaluation. The LSBE Internship Office will provide evaluation forms; or you may want to use your organization’s standard appraisal form to assess the intern’s performance and provide feedback. . Provide liability coverage for student intern. The University of Minnesota Duluth Worker’s Compensation and Liability coverage does not extend to student interns. Employers may be concerned about injuries to students on-the-job or problems that could arise due to student inexperience. We recommend that concerns of this nature be addressed to your legal counsel. Your existing worker’s compensation covers paid employees and could possibly be extended to volunteers for a nominal fee if this work arrangement is established. 6.Abide by the University of Minnesota employment policies regarding the treatment of employees, including prevention of sexual harassment in the work place. Mentor/Supervisor: 1. Serve as a model, coach, mentor, and tutor to the student. 2. Assist the student in identification of learning outcomes and activities to achieve them. 3.Assign the student specific and significant duties and projects that contribute to the student’s education but are also beneficial to the operations of the organization. 4. Ensure that opportunity is provided to permit the student to achieve agreed upon learning outcomes within the allotted time. 5. Observe and/or obtain observations of the student’s interactions and work within the organization and provide feedback. 6. Share information and thought processes with the student to provide as much insight as possible into successful approaches to management responsibilities. 7.Provide the student orientation concerning policies, rules and regulations. 8. Provide a concluding evaluation of the student’s performance during the internship upon completion in a manner which will encourage the student to grow in his/her administrative skills. 9. Report misconduct on the part of the student immediately to the faculty advisor and work with the faculty advisor to determine appropriate action to rectify problems or conclude the internship experience at the organization. Faculty advisor: 1. Provide the student and mentor information concerning institutional policies governing internship experiences. . Provide the mentor with written guidelines concerning the content and conduct of the internship and such additional advice and consultation as may be necessary or requested to ensure a satisfactory learning experience for the student. 3. Provide instruction to the mentor concerning learning objectives for a successful internship and procedures to follow to structure and supervise a successful internship. 4. Take action to withdraw a student whose conduct violates organizational rules or who proves not to benefit from the learning experiences provided by the organization. 5.Maintain contact with the student and mentor during the internship to ensure that objectives are being met and that problems are dealt with in a timely manner. At least one on-site visit will be performed. 6. Ensure that all internships are initiated with a signed learning agreement approved by the student, mentor and faculty advisor. 7. Review student’s journal, final written report, and performance evaluations. Student: 1. Apply for academic credit through college registration and work with a faculty advisor for placement with a mentor. 2. Learn and abide by organizational standards as applied to personnel, e. . follow facility hours and dress code policies, etc. 3. Take as active a role as possible in the operations of the organization, performing actual duties within the department as permitted by staff to learn first-hand the activities and their contribution to the overall effectiveness of the organization. 4. Prepare a list of learning outcomes expected from the internship and obtain approval for it from the mentor and faculty advisor, then identify and pursue specific experiences which will achieve those outcomes, again in consultation with the faculty advisor and mentor. 5.Identify and agree with the mentor upon a special project to be completed to satisfy course requirements while providing a learning experience which assists in meeting the student’s learning outcomes. 6. Meet course requirements for completion of assignments including preparation of two reports and weekly journal entries. 7. Taking into consideration course requirements and the student’s personal work and volunteer experience, prepare a schedule of the amount of time to be spent at the organization, obtain approval of the proposed schedule from the mentor and faculty advisor and ensure that it is implemented.
